What to do about arctic foxes when they run up to you?

Interesting story. I don’t have experience with Arctic foxes. The red foxes I’ve observed, from a distance, in a big city area, seem to be shy of humans. I normally wouldn’t encourage an encounter with a wild animal.

I now live in an area out in farmland country, and I’ve seen many types of critters, both alive, and roadkill. I sometimes, running in the cold winter night, can hear off in the distance packs of howling coyotes, which I wouldn’t want to encounter up close.

OP have you tried falling to the ground and rolling around on your back like a dog that wants to play, this is considered friendly behaviour amongst canines. the fox will come over to you and jump on your belly and thereafter a special bond will be formed.

OP why don't you strike up a conversation with the fox. Ask him about his native lands, the weather and whatnot. one tip, be careful not to get confused between Arctic and Antarctica, arctic foxes just HATE that. It's like calling any asian person chinese. You will be poles apart from the get-go.

I get very upset when I see a fox run over on the road. Poor guys.

If this happens often and you are tempted to play with them, I recommend getting a preventative rabies vaccine.
