Totally different deal here in America, soccer gets all those who can't play football or basketball. While those other countries soccer means everything.
Is it just knock out at this stage not points? There's 16 teams left...
It is knock out. If it is tied they will play an additional 30 minutes. Fifteen minutes going in each direction, like a first half and second half of overtime. Even if a goal is scored, they play all 30 minutes (it is not sudden death). If it remains tied it goes to penalty kicks. Five for each team. If it is tied after that, they alternate penalty kicks until an advantage is realized.

The US is wealthy and populated. My podunk town has at least 15 nicely maintained soccer fields that are well used. Every other podunk town around here does too. It seems like the US could a more competitive men's national team.

Hmm that's interesting at 16 teams left. When I saw them grouped like that I thought it would be them all playing each other and the top two going through on points. Maybe it's changed.
So they could end up playing the normal 90 mins plus 30 mins and then penalties. That's quite the endurance test. I wonder how hot it is in the stadium too.

That’s nonsense. Soccer just isn’t as popular as the major sports and even some of the minor ones.

Interesting. So in basketball and football there are 1500 players, that leaves 328,659,211 Americans left to play soccer. Wouldn't those "awesome" athletes that didn't make the football or basketball team and make $0 dollars right now play the "lesser" game of soccer and earn $100 million? How about the 1000 out of 1500 "awesome" athletes in basketball and football US leagues that only earn a million want to earn $5 million-$50 million by playing that "easy" soccer game?

Ja but 320 million thought they could make it in fball and bball up til college age. At that point it's tough to begin anew in soccer...but hobby jogging and golf work.
