I went through one of the college teams I follow and every one of the most successful runners was better, relatively speaking, at HS XC and 3200 than they were at the 1600 or 800. Some were great at the 1600 or 800, but their results at longer distances were already better.
Does this always hold up? Any examples to the contrary besides those who didn’t run XC or run the 3200 seriously?
I wonder if it might actually be a red flag of sorts in recruiting for XC if the HS mile is better than the 3200 / XC, even if the 1600 time is pretty quick.
