I’ve been weight training four days a week this year and find myself sleeping like 9 hours many nights, averaging about 8.5. It also takes some time to get into “bed mode”, so I’m often in bed from like 10:30 to 8:30, but I really can’t actually afford this much time in bed and can get away with it only because of flexible work hours. I don’t have any of the usual causes of “hypersomnia”, and my sleep is sound to extent I can feel it and measure it with my watch (about 17% deep sleep and the rest light or REM).
Back when I was running like 6 days a week (and not weight training), I don’t remember needing this much sleep. Is this common for weight trainers actively gaining weight, at like 2+ lbs a pound a month like I have been? I can accept it as a cost of this extended muscle gain phase, but am wondering if muscle-maintenance weight training thereafter will continue to force me to sleep so much.
