Dear community,
I know triathletes aren’t enormously popular amongst runners
(neither are they amongst cyclists or let alone swimmers for that matter) but I
still dare to raise a run-specific question in this forum: can I achieve a PR
on the HM just coming out of the triathlon season?
I have been doing triathlon for more than 15 years and
basically ran all my running competitions out of a triathlon training program.
Only in some years when the Middle-European triathlon saison had ended
(sometime in september) I would go for a little more run-focused training for
another month or two. Actually that never really resulted in better running
times compared to the triathlon periods and even led to the very few injuries I
have had in the past. My PB on 10k is just below 34 minutes and has been there
since 2012 approximately. Still, I am convinced I should be able to run faster
than that because in many triathlons I ran sub35 off the 1.5k swim and 40k bike
time trial, so anything but tapered legs there. I confirmed the low 34 very
often, even in total off-season after 3-6 weeks of unstructured and easy training
only.
My explanation is that it’s a fine line between being fit for a triathlon
but too unrested for PB running, and that often after off-season I am just much
more rested. If then I focus on running “too much”, it’s again a fine line before
leaving my sweetspot of running volume that I can actually digest and transform
into performance. Not sure whether that figures, you may comment if you like.
Nonetheless, I would like to give it another try and focus
on the run for the next 4 weeks in order to improve my PR on the half marathon.
It’s currently at 1h16m26s and I’d be fine with just beating it by any margin.
It dates back to 2009 when I was 22 years old. Now I am 35. Given that my run
in general (judging from flat 10k times around 34 minutes but especially from
loads of 5-10k runs within triathlons) has not deteriorated, I am quite
optimistic that the HM time should come down a bit because back when I ran the
1h16 I had never been sub35 on 10k flat.
Over the last years, my yearly training volumes have been
very consistently around 3-4 weekly hrs for running, meaning I exceeded 50k on
rare occasions only. There were a little more of these occasions recently
because this year, for the first time, I focused on long distance triathlon
meaning I had to run a full marathon off a 3.8k swim and a 180k bike. For
various reasons, I still could not exceed the 60-70k range and even that I only
reached for about 5 weeks but let’s say I have some more volume under my belt
this year than usually I would. It’s been almost 3 weeks since the Long
distance tri and my legs are starting to feel willing to spin again.
Considering that I have confirmed my old 10k throughout this
year again and the fact that I had significantly higher volumes for the month
of August, do you guys consider an attack on my PR on the half marathon in just
4 weeks from now realistic? If so, what should bet he staple workouts for a
period as short as the month of October?
I was thinking about some sort of test this weekend in order
to see where I stand right no wand whether it’s worth the try (or whether
should ease into a classical off-season right away).
Would there be a staple workout that I can easily do myself fort
hat purpose (on the track even)? Or would a 10k race do a better job in
predicting my chances (the last one was mid-June)? There’s even a HM nearby
this weekend. Of course, a HM time says the most about my HM ability right now
but I am afraid that the need to rest could shorten the preparation period even
more considering it’s short anyways.
Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions!
