Do you need to have a teaching degree to become a high school track/XC coach? I\'m just wondering.
Thanks

nope but it does help and you wont make any money if you dont
It depends on where you go. Some places only allow school staff to be coaches. I know of many places that have paid coaches that aren't employed by the school in any other way. Being a teacher definitely helps though.
I didn't think you even needed a college degree to coach?
Yes/No?
where we live, all you need to do is hold your hand up when they announce the job opening. nobody wants the job. no skills required. our current coach is living proof of that.
No, but you should have to pass a psychiatric test!
Some schools will hire outside of the school, meaning it will only pay you $1000-3000 per season. This is called "supplemental" work and is meant for the teachers. It's usually the science or physics teachers who end up coaching and they are usually decent runners themselves. At least you hope.

Most schools will require that the head coach be an employee of the district, but perhaps not an assistant. That could be in any position, and not necessarily a teaching position.
Why?
The school will want to be able to hold something over your head if you don't show up for coaching. AND They will most certainly want to play the CYA game in terms of liability.
Non certified positions are beginning to go away because of federal mandates on overtime pay, which technically you would be entitled to if you were in an uncertified position at your school and then coaching in the afternoon. Example: You run the in-school suspension and babysit all day long. You clearly don't need a degree to do that, but when you head out the door to coach, you would also be entitled to overtime pay as is federally mandated by the hours you are putting in. Translation: You'd be the highest paid coach in the state.
I am also seeing less and less volunteer positions in schools because of concerns over backgrounds of these volunteers.
Just my take as an AD. Good luck.
