Both Alan Webb and Galen Rupp were amazing HS runners, but which was the best?

Apples and oranges really. But HS creds don't get you on the medal stand

The 3:53 is by far the most impresive performance. As good as 13:37 is, 3:53 is far superior. So, if your measure is single great performance, Alan Webb wins. However, if you extend it to overall abilitly covering all distance events, teh debate is a little more interesting. I would wager that Galen could have beaten Alan of 10k 5k and maybe 3k/2miles in high school. Here's the real question though, Isn't this a question that has been asked a million time already with Dathan instead of Rupp. What's the matter, is Dathan not interesting anymore?

I think Webb blows Galen away in 2 mile if they ran against each other in high school. Webb ran his time indoors against no competition (yes, Nate was in the race, but he got dogged). Not to mention he wasn't in his 3:53 shape when he ran the 2 mile. If he was at his peak, he could have thrown down a monster 2 mile, also. I don't even think Galen would have beaten Webb in cross (but there's no way to measure that, just opinion)... Galen probably would have taken Webb at 10k, but Webb wasn't training for anything near that distance.

I normally like your stuff, Vipam. This is a "pretty" good topic as well.

BUT, most "versatile?" Well, you tell ME.

Webb also split 47.xx in a 400m relay(!) not to mention he was highly competitive in cross country @5k (2nd to who?....umm, Ritzenhenin). So, in reality Webb's versaility spans from 400m ability (although no where near the other marks of both his and rupp's that are all-time marks) that is more than good--probably top-150 every year, for a distance runner, and all his other marks, including the fact he "couldve" run a mean 5000 on the track like his cross country ability showed.

The A-Standard for the 5k is usually around 13:20, Rupp didn't come close to that.

I would have to say agree that Webb has the most impressive mark than Rupp but both were incredible in High School. The two would easily make top 10 all time High School track and field athletes. What almost as amazing as Webb 3:53.43 was seeing Rupp go for a sub 7:55 in the 3000m passing 2000m in 5:18.5 but slowed somewhat and still got the 3000m HSR.

most versatile: tie

Alan range streches from 800m to 5000m

with decent marks in the 400m. GALEN RUPP range is from 1500m to 10000m with decent ability in the 800m. Rupp 10000m would have easily been under 29 if he had better pacing and not forced to lead or go solo.

To the poster mentioning Dathan Ritzenhein

as OUTSTANDING as he was in high school he was not as good as Webb and Rupp mark/performance wise:

2 Miles............8:44.13 7th all time

5000m.............13:44.70 3rd all time

all three will be major forces on the European Circuit in 2007, yes even against the Ethiopians, Quatar, and Kenyans etc!

I know that, he still set the sophmore mile record. I could have stated that better. Any record someone sets along the way should be considered when talking about who had a better hs career. Whether or not hte record still stands. Rupp didn't break any sophmore or junior year records did i don't believe.
