1975: Prefontaine kills self in a DUI accident ----> gets a professional T&F invitational named after him
2022: Bjorklund involved in DUI accident ----> Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon gets renamed the Latoya Snell Half Marathon by the Cancel Police
Wait till the interaction is posted on YouTube from the police camera/mic.
Welcome buddy
For those who do not know, Garry ran a 4:05 mile in HS while growing up on a farm in a tiny town called Twig, MN. He was in the same HS class as Prefontaine and had similar talent. Garry ran 27:49 in 1976 and 27:46 in 1984, at a time when those marks were considered very impressive.

Star Tribune is wild for this lol.
Moderate and low speed public transportation, but widely available and inexpensive, does wonders for these kind of problems in Europe.
At his age, which is probably early 70's, I would hope he cuts back on the booze.
Let's be real the sport is full of Drunks.
1. Steve Prefontain (Dies DUI crash)
2. 2008 Olympic Marathon Champ Sammy Wanjiru Falls off Balcony Dies Drunk.
3. Asbel Kiprop admitted alcoholic
4. Gary Bjorkland for sure an Alcoholic that BAC is not a night out at the bar type of BAC.
5. Boaz Cheboiywo NCAA champ in a Michigan State prison for killing a mother during a DUI crash.
Should I go on.....
Sad to hear. BJ is one of the most humble, soft spoken runners from the "big bang" era of the 70's.
I dont think we should be flogging him. He was a great runner which is the only thing that makes this thread worthy and relevant. But obviously something is wrong with his decision making process a) to be that intoxicated and b) to get behind whe wheel.
I was there watching the race in Knoxville. Talked to Prefontaine before race. He couldn’t have been nicer. Bjourkland gave him a great race but Pre gutted it out and prevailed. A guy I knew stole Pre’s sweats during race and If you see pics of the awards ceremonies he’s not wearing OU gear. Beautiful day and tough , hilly course

Humble or not the guy is clearly an alcoholic. There are plenty of humble people that battle addiction. The distance running community in particular is pretty heavily involved deep with alcoholism. From the athletic level to the coaching and beyond. I would not be surprised at all if disgraced coach Alberto Salazar is an alcoholic. Too piggy back off of Post # 15 hear is a picture of 2001 NCAA Division 1 XC Champion Boaz Cheboiywo. https://mdocweb.state.mi.us/otis2/otis2profile.aspx?mdocNumber=669003
A lot of the running community uses the athletes and once they are finished with them they toss them out the door like a trash bag. If they focused more on transitioning athletes less of this would happen. It is hard to be in the spot light center stage being the best in the world to being a nobody.
