I know most runners do a 2- to 3-week taper before a marathon, but I don't want to get sluggish. I lost two weeks in July due to getting an ear infection 7/14 and then getting hit by a car 7/21 but was able to put in 14 miles last week (Sat. and Sun.) and then a solid 54 this week. I probably lost appx. 80 miles of total mileage in July as a result. I ran 105 miles for the month. In June I was at 150. I feel stupid because had I looked sooner I would have avoided getting hit by the car. But it's in the past.
I'm hoping that if I can stack mileage up until 10/6 and then a soft taper (i.e. going from 50-55 to 40-45 and then down to 25, instead of down to 20 and then 0) that will be enough to help me complete the marathon on 10/16. I'm not looking for a time goal at this point, just to enjoy it, complete it, and have fun.
Was able to do the 54 and most of it was EZ and slower mileage to protect my legs. It's more like 90/10 (10%, if that, for speed, mostly MP effort (guesstimated 7:46 pace) but no faster. And NO track work!). I could probably even increase a little bit but my sweet spot is 50-60 mpw in the past. I'm also taking it easy due to a cast on my arm until 8/18, but I've had no issues with it affecting my form.
