Standards are out:
Marathon:
Men 2:09 Women 2:28
10000m:
Men 27:10 Women 30:40
My first reaction is that the men's marathon and women's 10k standards are going to be devastating for European and American athletes. I don't think in the UK we will have a single man who qualifies by the standard unless Farah still has something in the tank. The women's marathon standard is still soft, it needs to be 2:25 at least.
The women's 10k standard has dropped 35 seconds which was probably needed given that the WR is now 29-low.
I think it's clear that these standards are intended to have more athletes qualify via ranking than by the standard. WA always wanted fields to be made up of 50% qualifiers by standard and 50% qualifiers by ranking, this might achieve that. It might also signal harder standards for other events. The aim, I think, is to incentivise racing on the circuit to improve your ranking rather than going for a one-and-done race to get the standard.
Big news on the 10k front: finishing in the top 8 in World XC will also be considered for qualifying.
