With (very active) kids, work, wife going back to school, and increased business travel, it's just too much of a hassle to do high mileage anymore. All the little things like being tired/achy when my kids want to play soccer with me, injuries/niggles, massive calorie requirements, figuring out where to fit runs etc. are starting to p*ss me off.
The breaking point is this morning - my wife and I went out with her childhood friend & husband last night, who she hadn't seen in several years. We drank a lot and had a blast. Of course I slept terrible, woke up dehydrated with a headache, and know my 18mile long run today is going to suck. 8-10 miles sounds much more pleasant. I don't want to give up nights like that around my training.
SO THE POINT: For those of you that reduced mileage (say from 60+MPW to 30-35MPW) what is the best way to allocate these runs over 4-5 days? I've made the tough decision to pull out of my fall marathon and instead sign up for an October 10-mile race. I'm thinking something like
- Run 1: 6 miles easy
- Run 2: tempo or intervals (probably 6-8 miles total)
- Run 3: 7-8 miles progression (start very easy, finish around half-marathon/10k pace)
- Run 4: long 10-14
