Relay Rules - What is going on?

does anyone know about this? You guys spent the last 2 weeks talking about a dream formation (Mu - Steiner - Dalilah - Syd) when it wasn't possible in the first place.

And then there's this Jamaica situation which makes no sense at all.

Did World Athletics make a mistake? Did they forget to enforce the rules for Jamaica W 4x100? Should Jamaica be DQ and miss tonight's final? So many questions.

This is big news and you guys don't carr abiut it.

They should be able to run any athlete that has qualified for the meet. If we want to run Kara Winger, Chase Ealey, Jessica Woodward, and Brooke Andersen we should be allowed to do that.

Honestly I agree but unfortunately there are strict and stupid rules.

If Jamaica runs with ETH SAFP and Shericka tonight they WILL be breaking the rules. One could say they already broke the rules as they did not use at least one of the big 3 for the semi finals.

Just imagine if they break the WR tonight just to be DQ later because they broke the rules.

That's not a "rule" as it is only in the Team Manual.

In the World Athletics Competition and Technical Rules, Rule 24.10 covers what you're asking.

Anyone who is entered in any event at the competition is eligible to be on the relay, and all four members who run in one round can be replaced for the final.

Not in Mixed Relay. They could change just one member of the team.

Why have a team manual at all if the rules there don't apply? Why change from 8 to 6 if in the end you can still use 8 athletes?

Don't teams have to declare a relay pool? What ere the announcers always talking about at the trials when they say an athlete will be eligible for the relay pool?

Crazy that they are putting Felix in the pool of the 4x400. She takes up one of the 3 spots for non 400m runners. Only 2 spots left (Sydney and Steiner??)

btw they all ran M W M W only because it was in the manual, same reason they only got to substitute one athlete.

In Doha 2019 the US team who won used 8 athletes total for the mixed, now they used only 5, as the manual says. Not all teams used M W M W, Poland used M M W W in Doha 2019 as you might remember.

So I'm inclined to think they have to folloe the manual.

Out of 6 members of a relay team, at least one and max 4 must also be entered for respective individual event.

National federation can not keep alll individual competitors out of relay, team but can not use more than 4 of them. None of them have to actually run the race.

So, Jamaica is OK for the time being.

How many substitutions are allowed, if any? If at least one, all 3 Jamaican top girls can run in finals.

Going beyond the six "eligible" pool "rule" was broken by the U.S. at the London 2012 Olympic Games when Angelo Taylor was added to the final at the last second. Manteo Mitchell broke his leg 200m into his semifinal split yet managed to run another 200m. And LaShawn Merritt and Jeremy Wariner were both out with injuries. That left the U.S. with 3 eligible runners. Allowing others into the relay pool should be known as the Angelo Taylor Rule since he was already at the 2012 games.

Americans will probably protest before the final as they ran with a great team because they read the rules and they know what is going on.

If nothing happens and Jamaica runs the Final WA is simply a completely incompetent organization.

That was NOT an attempt to derail, not that you can manage to grasp that. It was to point out to trolls like you that the precedent to allow more flexibility in relay pool choice came about because of the U.S. being allowed to go past 6. The reason that Angelo Taylor was allowed to run was that he was readily available. The reason was not because the U.S. only had 3 runners who were "able" to run. Two sick/injured, and a guy with a broken leg who still managed to split 46.1 in the semis.

CONCLUSION: Jamaica WILL Not be DQed.

There it is. They have to be that flexible, not for the powerhouse teams but for the lesser squads where the talent is not as deep. Avoid empty lanes at all costs.
