Not sure how "judging" works these days but I am sure they can come up with a computer that can analyze on the fly if they are having a flight phase or not. They depend on these judges to look and be able to tell.
"The steeplechase is moronic! Why put barriers or limitations on people's forward progress? They should just run 3,000m on the flat! And the same with the hurdles--what's the point of limiting a person's movement forward in any way?"
I think a lot of sports are kind of moronic? American football where the foot rarely touches the ball? Curling? Baseball where portly people stand around a lot?
Walking is something a lot of people do so I can see the appeal.
Probably what I hate most about it is the fact that we as a country have basically said meh this is stupid. What ends up happening is the racewalk events are the only events we don’t qualify a whole team for. I will say the course this year was really well lined with fans; kinda awesome seeing that. But like seriously, we had the second to last place finisher on the womens side and on the mens side we had the overall slowest person out there (yes, slower than all the women too). If we even had 20 guys who did mediocre in D1, like 4:02-4:10 milers, 13:55 guys, etc. who spent two years walking, I just about guarantee that their third year we’d have new American records along with top ten finishes at worlds. That’s probably what is most moronic about the racewalk. So anyways, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Sometimes you've got to jump over things when being chased by something or someone (this is actually a far more common occurrence throughout human history than simply running on a flat, manicured surface); so both of these events test useful and natural kinds of athleticism.
When have you even seen someone negotiate with a predator (or an attacker)? "Hey lion, I'm going to try to escape your clutches, but I have to keep one foot on the ground at all times."
It's contrived to the point of idiocy - you might as well do the egg and spoon race.
