I'm a coach with an athlete who has recently (the past two or so years) trained for the 800 and 1500 distances. He ran in high school but decided not to run competitively in college (we are a club team). He recently capped out around 1:51 in the 800m (ran similar times peaking both years) and around a 3:57 1500m. In high school, he had 49.x 400m speed but was undertrained (he ran an 800m in 2:00 at this same time in HS). He has great natural speed but just isn't able to translate that into distance races despite distance training.
My question is, how do I usher him back into 400m/400m hurdles/600m training after taking multiple years off and focussing more on distance? Should it be more time in the weight room? Significantly less mileage and more sprints? I'm not a sprint coach by any means so I am at a loss here.
Thanks in advance.
