Everything that is wrong about our sport- Kibiwott Kandie can't go to Worlds because he doesn't have a qualifying time

I feel like no matter what the qualifying rules are, people will cry about someone getting left out. Kandi knew the standards and failed to qualify. That's on him, not WA.

It's so unfortunate that K. K. Can't be at the worlds. That's how the sport starts becoming boring.

Exactly, really annoying once people start saying things are unfair and ignore the accountability of the actual individual...

so he's 5 seconds off the qualifying time and is the Kenyan national champion - it's insane that they're not letting him in.

I understand not letting a "national champion" in from a tiny, slow country (for example, a random island nation of <1 million people) but a Kenyan champion who ran 5 seconds off at altitude and 37 seconds under on the roads should be allowed in

I think it's outrageous that he isn't in, but I also think is true. maybe he has poor management? This is inexcusable. Or it's not that important to him

Actually, this is the opposite of how it should work.

ANYONE that can hit the WA standard should be allowed in. National Federations are corrupt fiefdoms that should have no role in selecting athletes.

Indeed, he is a member of the entitled class. It has become a sad world now that the bureaucrats and functionaries of this world no longer respect the fact that there are two classes of citizens: those with entitlements, and the rest. Instead they have this bizarre idea that "all men are created equal" (what nonsense) and the same rules apply to everyone. It was a much better world when those with influence could bend the rules and get special treatment. Now, alas, we all have to suffer under a common standard.

I long for the good old days when a quiet word at the Country Club, or maybe a suitable filled brown paper envelope, could get one privileges that were denied to the riff-raff.

His World Ranking is 17 now, so why can’t get in via that route? Am I missing something? Can @gault hit up his agent on this Gianni Demadonna to get the scoop. It is cool he will be at Peachtree but I’d rather see him at Worlds

if the sport was purely merit based, this would be true, but then the WORLD championships and olympics would be limited to very few countries and wouldn't have the prestige and interest that they currently enjoy. many countries would simply give up on the programs, and this surely would not be good for athletics.

More correctly, that is on Kenyan Athletics. They held their 10k champs at altitude and knew full well that Kandie needed the standard. They could have sent him to run another 10k in Europe or the US where he could have cruised and got the standard. Or better yet, held the trials at Pre or another race at sea level. But they just assumed that he would be able to get the standard at altitude and put all his eggs in one basket.

Is being ranked 17th in the World Rankings for 10,000m not enough? What is the point of the rankings then?

Yeah I think we need some answers on this from his agent, World Athletics and Athletics Kenya. They subbed in Noah Kibet onto the 800m squad after noticing a mistake in the results. They had the Tim/Etyang saga last year…Clearly they’re capable of adjusting the squad after the announcements.

The field size is 27 and all 27 could be filled by athletes with the standard so there's no guarantee.

True, although I believe Morhad Amdouni was not named to the French team (10000m or marathon) and I could see maybe Birhanu Balew scratch as well. Tatsuhiko Ito from Japan is ahead of Kandie. I think final team selections are due by 4th July?

Should have done like bowerman has done. Set up some shame time trial meet to get the time. Certainly had Ling enough to do it

The rule is a bad rule. We have been saying for over a year that ranking allotments should be done on a per country basis. If a country had 3 qualifiers in an event they can select any three people they want. Then national championships would mean something, selection races would be guaranteed to mean something.

The ranking system should be set up so that the Kenyan qualifying race guarantees you get enough points if you are in top 3. It is a MAJOR race. Someone top 3 at it should get enough points for Worlds, but turns out the Kenyan qualifying race even gets less points than the Kenyan nationals which were a few weeks ago which are given the same amount of points as the Jamaican 10k nationals.

Every rule that WA puts in place should be put through a simple test.

1) Does this make sense in the real world?

2) Does it think of the fans?

The system should ensure that the top 3 at the Kenyan Trails in a distance race should automatically qualify for Worlds. Same for US Trials, Olympic Marathon Trials etc.

Similarly, any DQ decision at Worlds should have to be decided in 3 minutes for TV. Instead races will be decided hours after they go off the air. Terrible for fans.
