Bad Timing. It would have been 20,000 per day if the Supreme Court waiting a week!
That had nothing to do with it. Just not enough people felt like going, which is sad.
As the older people die off, less and less younger people are going to attend track meets. They would rather stay home and stream it instead of going in person.
Anyone know how ticket sales have gone for the WC? After all the years of build-up for Eugene to hold this meet, after all the controversy and money spent on the new stadium...
I am sure the cost of gas, cost of airfare, and cost of rental cars had nothing whatsoever to do with it.
No, it doesn't have anything to do with it.
In 2018 and before, there was also the cost of gas, cost of airfare, and cost of rental cars. That's not new. But the stands were packed whenever Eugene had NCAA or USA championships. Now the stands aren't even close to packed.
Normal turnout used to be 10,000 per day. Now it's 3,000 per day. That's a huge difference.
It's not the cost of going that is stopping people. They just don't want to go.

Evenings close to sold out. Tickets available for morning sessions.
I guess it proves, if they build it, they will NOT come...
Hayward Field used to get a lot of locals to come to the meets. And a lot of locals were mad about the old Hayward Field being torn down.
I wonder if the lack of spectators is because many locals aren't showing up just because they don't like the new stadium?
So they were coming to sit in a stadium. Not to see great competition, collegiate, American or World Record. huh. That could be true I guess.
The crowd at Worlds will be wealthy and from all over the world. It will be a good crowd. Probably, mostly regional travelers from the American contingent and not those from all over the country but I could be wrong. Probably most Americans just planned one trip to Eugene.
Track and field is a dying sport. If you haven't realized that by now, it's time to wake up. Just wait for what attendance will look like in 5 years.
Track is fine. It's just that Eugene is a dying city. If you want people to come to watch a meet, you need to host it where they live. Expecting thousands of people to fly across the country with two layovers, just to sleep in an overpriced motel is not a good business model. But this is just about nike and Phil's deep pockets.

And your theory is that those 7,000 attendees per day have "died off" since 2018? I guess COVID took a huge toll.

Nothing was said about 7,000 people dying off since 2018. You just made that up.
Clearly some of you never been to one of the big meets in Eugene. The Eugene hotels are very expensive during those meets, even the Motel 6 type of hotels are expensive. If you can afford an expensive hotel room for 4 or 5 nights, an increase in the cost of gas is tiny in comparison.
The cost of going in 2022 vs the cost of going in 2018 isn't the problem.
