The truth is that often you see runners who do stuff and you’re not sure why. Some of them are also just trying to “stay out of trouble.” Think Athing Mu. There are many others. If the jostling bothers one, one does have options.
I’ve never understood getting physical at the beginning of races. It’s just an unnecessary exertion of energy. Moving to lane two and surging takes less energy and coordination than throwing an elbow to get around someone. This coming from someone that used to play middle linebacker and tight end in early highschool.
If you see pro runners after a slow 1500, you realize that track is a contact sport, played by people wearing shoes with needles.
