Not a doctor, so I can’t comment on what causes it. But it happened to me once, so I can attest that it does happen. And it was not for attention. On the contrary, all I wanted to do was just get across the line and go hide somewhere, and I couldn’t even do that.
i don't know how it works, but ive seen kids go there in the 400 and 800. usually end up having a breakout race their next time at that distance. probably similar but a little bit more going on when this happens in a 10000
Pushed to hard > oxygen deficit > inadequate ATP generation > muscles have limited ability to contract > wobbly body for 2 mins till oxygen and ATP levels recover.
The way Cooper looked at the end of NCAA cross was likely due to heat exhaustion his body over heated while he was pushing the pace and his muscles shut down and overheated. Remember this race was in Humid Florida in November where most of the country and the teams at NCAAs were not accustomed to that type of heat that time of year.
He talked about it in a recent podcast with Emma Abrahamson. Can't remember exactly what he said but it sounded like after the fact he got tests and found out he was low on certain nutrients and has since fixed that
