Moderate volume, high quality. Doubles yes, and some work that would really fall into active rest. Less volume as an elite than as a teen when he was walk/jogging to school and back, along with herding.
His primary advantage over Ryun in 1968 was specificity of work. And of course a fearlessness to push at altitude.
You can't train hard 3x a day, if the rumors are true about training 3x are true. It would be 2 shorter easy shakeout runs and one main workout. As to his training, they were probably training no different than the British athletes of that era since the first athletic coaches in Kenya at that time were British.
