Attendance at the event isn't really that great.
And they call this Track Town USA.
That's because that's where the sun hits and it was warm. People in general admission prefer to sit in the shade.
Well, it’s a town.
there are several tracks.
close enough
With the cost of plane tickets, gas, essentially everything right now, it does not surprise me to see people passing on spending their money to go to USAs. Even family members of competitions I bet is at an all time low.
We can only hope that maybe everyone just invested in Worlds rather than USAs. But I think that Worlds might also be a disappointment. Lots of tickets still available even despite the initial hype and limited availability.
1. Apparently the locals dont care. You get higher attendance at any HS football game anywhere in the US on a Friday
2. Why would anyone travel to Oregon after seeing Portland overthrown during chaz/chop occupation? Portland politicians like heh... nothing to see here.. just um... a little festival we completely support...

I am one of the few who made the trip to Eugene for the USA meet and have to say the meetvis dead.
Walking around the stadium yesterday seems the average age of fans is in the 80s. Thought groups like Citius were changing the sport to draw in younger fans. Where are they?
Attendance is so bad USATF even stopped publishing official paid admission after day 1.
Without the U20 athletes and families attendance would beveven lower
The town certainly has changed over the years and not in a good way.
There are lots of fans who would love to travel to see these events, but there are many who will not go there after how they handled the riots and Covid, and there are many who are still scared following Covid. Sort of a double hit to attendance.

So your saying people are afraid to attend an outdoor event due to covid yet indoor stadiums are packed for all kinds of events.
People are tired of Eugene. Have a group of friends who would travel to the US Champs each year and they have had their fill of Eugene and now simply stay home.
Stop making excuses for low attendance at the meets in Eugene (Memorial Day weekend, opening of bird watching season, to hot, to cold, rain, sun, held during the workweek, held on the weekend)
Track people complain that they have to pay to watch a meet on line and that is the same public we expect to spend money to travel to a meet and buy tickets? Not going to happen.
At the rate things are going in a few short years the stands will be totally empty
No one goes there anymore. It's too crowded.
I lived in Oregon for the first 45 years of my life. Nice places, over time, generally get loved to death. It's nothing like it was, even 20 years ago. It's an extension of California, expensive, commercial, generic. I'd rather go to Omaha for the CWS.

There seems to be a real disconnect between the the cost of going and the attendance. Just not enough hotel rooms in Eugene to handle many fans plus all the athletes for these big events? Or are there a lot of (expensive) empty hotel rooms this week? Nice facility in the wrong place?

This.
Combination of a tough economy and unrealistic hype from the Nike / Oregon nexus is going to result in this Worlds being a disappointing display. Kind of what Knight and all those cronies deserve, really.

Not in a position to shell out several thousand dollars to go to the second-biggest track meet that will be held in Eugene over the next month. Otherwise, good points.
There are maybe 500 people in the stands for these 5Ks.
