I've done the majority of my runs in the reebok floatride energy but recently switched to the asics novablast 2 for more cushion. Anyway I feel like they are beating my legs up (as well as being very noisy). Is this even possible? In my old shoes I could run in almost silence.
I know what you mean about the Novablast 2 being noisy. On the plus side, people on the path I run usually hear me approaching from quite a distance.
I'm not sure about the beating up the legs part, but I run in firmer shoes twice a week for workouts and it does seems like my leg feel refreshed after taking a break from the Novablast for a day.

That’s a significant transition. You should introduce cushion slowly via rotation, not suddenly switch entirely. Commonly pedaled running wisdom would tell you that more cushion is likelier to switch the impact and injury zones higher up the leg to the knees or hips compared to minimalist shoes that impact the foot more (with the caveat that controlled studies show weak to mixed results on such hypotheses).

That's interesting, I'm a minimalist guy for 10+ years even though my PT disapproves of it, and all the injuries I've had have always been in my hips. Never had a single injury - not even a niggle - in my feet or calves (knock on wood).
My take on this is that the minimalist shoes have made my calves and below stronger and therefore more resistent to injury but i dont really know.
And actually, the only time ive ever had my calves/achilles act up, was when I tried to transition to "normal" shoes - they were Nike Pegasus Turbo 2's. I made it about 30 miles in those shoes and my calves were screaming at me to stop the whole time.
For what it's worth, I think you should run it what feels best, not just because a guideline or what someone says.

I guess its like slapping a shoe on the pavement. It happened with my Novablast 1 and 2. I passed a running friend of mine on a path recently and he asked me if I make extra noise on purpose when I'm approaching people, but I was just running normal. Even worse is sometimes little pebbles or debris gets stuck in the crevices of the sole, then it gets really annoying.
No weird noises with any of my extra shoes. Other than the noise issue, they're great shoes.
Are you running at the same pace in each pair? I recently added the Saucony Endorphin Speed 2s to my mix and I go faster in them at the same perceived rate of exertion, but my legs feel a bit more beat up after workouts. If our bodies experience the same overall forces no matter the footwear, it would seem logical that simply holding that faster pace would be harder on the running infrastructure.
Since 'bounce' is everything in shoes currently, it will be interesting to see how the running public does in them over the next few years. I am as excited by the PEBA foams (yes I am a late arrival to PEBA) as I was when eTPU first arrived in Adidas shoes years ago. They make running much more pleasurable, which is half the battle. Running in most EVA foams is now a heavy, deadened, clunky chore anymore.

Yes, that is an important reason why controlled studies produce weak results if at all: what strengthens a musculoskeletal component over time, if it manages to survive the stress, is also what injures it if doesn’t.
My mental model is that cushioned shoes pass the impact further up, so if your calves are able to take it, your knees or hips are next in line. What is known fairly reliably is that we tighten our leg muscle chain more on softer surfaces like grass (and by extension cushioned shoes) compared to bouncing “looser” or with less muscle contraction on harder surfaces for the same pace.
