Dang, I like most people just remember Zola for the 1984 Olympics of course. This is old news to many of you but I just saw she still holds the World Jr World Records for 3000m (8:28:83) and 1 mile (4:17:57). Also, at 17 she ran 15:01 5000m breaking the world record (though not ratified b/c of S Africa apartheid--no fault of hers). Lowered the world record to 14:48 at age 19.
No super shoes for any of those.. or shoes at all??
Maybe the most talented young female runner of all time.
By the way this was in no way meant to diminish current AMAZING young female (or male) runners.. nor is it meant to disparage the new shoes. It was just that my jaw dropped when I realized how incredible Zola really was. Incredible talent. So sad that most just remember the tangled leg falling stuff in the Olympics.

I don't think that was why it was not ratified, because other landmarks were...perhaps something else.
But to say 'no fault of hers' shows ignorance of Apartheid. Zola and her family were supporters of the govt at the time. The govt had upwards of 70% support, and that excludes parties even further to the right of where they were.
She/her family could have easily renounced support, and join the non (or anti) apartheid athletics, where the likes of Wayde v Niekerks mum in particular was a top sprinter.

The hype for women 3000m, 1984 Summer Olympics was off the chart. I wish 3000m were still an Olympic event for women. I would like to see men add 3000m to Olympic schedule.
She was definitely the most talented young female runner of all time.
But saying that about a white African and you are seriously going to trigger a lot of people here.
I don't think she had any real coaching until she moved to GB either. And then consider the Soviet Bloc and American steroid cheats she was up against. Of course, the original burrito girl ruined her career in 84....
I admit I am ignorant about how here family viewed apartheid. I mainly meant that she was just a kid growing up in an environment she had no control over. I don't know anything of her personal beliefs or her family's beliefs. She was just freakin fast.. that's about all I know.

I was just going by the Wikepdia article: "Since her performance took place in South Africa, then excluded from international athletics competition because of its segregation policy, the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) refused to ratify Budd's time as an official world record."
As far as her view on apartheid -- I have no idea what they were-- just meant that she was just a kid and had no control over her government's apartheid stance. But dang she was fast. That was my only real point.

No worries, just trying to help with background.
However, innocent or not, and as taleneted as she was for sure, as a privileged white person she did have top coaching and she did get the opportunities...and with her British ancestry took a ticket out.
The other thing, mostly for Coevett's benefit, none of the Apartheid state aligned athletics of the time should be regarded as clean. Whether white privileged or black puppets who couldn't use the same restrooms. They were operating outside of international oversight, and did absolutely everything to show to the world that their sport had not suffered through sanctions. If you believe that any outrageous record of the time is squeaky clean, I have some burritos for you.
South Africa has been destroyed since the ending of Apartheid. Whites with all their privilege created a modern country over the course of many generations and now in one generation it has basically reverted back to the Stone Age. If you live in America go find an Indian to give your property to and a black to give your money to. Until you do, STFU.
Americans are still referring to indigenous North Americans as Indians. "Indian" jumps off the page for me because it is so inaccurate and now antiquated. In Canada we refer to who Americans call "Indians" as indigenous, native North Americans or First Nations, or their actual band.
Today's white people have no connection to the colonization of North America. Just as today's Mayans have no connection to those who sacrificed children or any of the other atrocities that happened 100s of years ago.
If someone is racist today, they are hateful and grew up in a hateful environment. Writing, "if you are white...." solves nothing.....the vast majority of white people are absolutely not racist.
(I am in a mixed-race relationship with 32 years of marriage and 37 years of being together with mixed-race kids).
Mary Decker did not cause Zola Budd to lose out on any medals in 1984. Zola Budd cut her off and caused Decker to lose out on her Olympic dreams after being ineligible in 1972 at 14, then out with compartment syndrome in 1976, out because of the boycott in 1980, and then tripped in 1984. If you were the best in the world after doubling in the 1500 and 3000 in 1983, with only about 100m not in first place, and had gone through that long a run of bad luck in the Olympics, you would be upset as well.
