I am tired of hearing Rojo on the Letsrun podcast go on about how high school girl phenoms
don’t pan out. This narrative is just simply not true and more often than not they have a decent post-high school career. Defining success as making an Olympics or winning a championship medal is a stupid metric and there are plenty of fast high school girls who had solid careers.
Looking at top-11 all-time girls high school 1500m times:
1. Mary Cain 4:04.62: Letsrun favorite poster child of teen phenomenon that burns out. Alberto was clearly a bad situation for her and hard to blame her. Also she literally was winning USA indoor titles and making World Teams as a teenager, that’s better than most “pros” accomplish in their career after competing for decades.
2. Alexa Efraimson 4:07.05: Is she a world beater? No. But she has had an OK professional career. Post-teenage years she has run and finished as high as 5th at USA Outdoor Championships in the 1500m which is pretty solid. She hasn’t dropped crazy fast times but she has made a career out of this sport and trains with one of the premier track groups. If she went to NCAA and ran the times she posted as a pro we would all be super impressed. I would hardly call her a
failure.
3. Kate Murphy 4:07.21: Never ran a step for Oregon or has done anything post-high school. Had a freak rare medical condition.
4. Christina Aragon 4:08.71: 8-time All-American, placed 3rd in recent 2022 NCAA Championships. Great college career.
5. Elise Cranny 4:10.95: Olympian and 2nd-fastest all-time in the 10km now, I think she turned out just fine.
6. Sadie Engelhardt 4:11.79: Still in high school.
7. Katie Rainsberger 4:12.62: 13-time All-American in college finishing 3rd in the Steeple in 2021. Now has a pro contract and training with Team Boss.
8. Ella Donaghu 4:14.11: 7-time All-American, finished as high as 3rd in 1500 at NCAAs in 2021. Also had a couple top-10 XC finishes as well. Now has a pro contract.
9. Ellie Shea 4:14.35: Still in high school.
10 Tuohy 4:14.45: Just won the 5K at NCAAs the other day and has dropped some impressive
times at 20 years old.
11 Jordan Hasay 4:14.50: Decorated college career at Oregon, made a worlds team at 10km and ran some amazing marathons…just not recently.
If you exclude the girls still in high school then 7/9 all have had some excellent
performances post-high school age. So please for the love of all that is holy will
Weldon or Johnathan please call out Robert on the podcast for his BS.
