Used to run with him and a bunch of other salty dogs on Sundays in Pacific Beach. He was a no none sense guy who looked out for the younger runners who showed promise. They took our hardware down from the pole @ Lamont and Diamond, but the memories remain.

not too sure to be honest but I remember relatively cool, cloudy conditions, and Greg Meyer running a great race to win it in 2:09:00, Benji Durden was another American in the mix also. Those performances seemed to be overshadowed by Joan Benoit running a world best 2:22 which smashed the old record of 2:25 for women marathoners;

1983 was most definitely a tailwind year similar to 1994 and 2011.

Ron was a hard worker and a great guy. He popped a few fast marathons, got some nice cash from Adidas via Dellinger and had a sweet 911 Turbo Carrera that he had shipped from Germany.

We (I, Mark Belger, Steve Holl, Bobby B., and others) used to run hill repeats a few blocks north of there at Kate Sessions Park, which provided a beautiful grass hill. We used to run from near Loring Street up to just shy of Park Drive, roughly 180-200 m and rather steep. After every pair of hill efforts, we would mix in strides on a gentler slope along Park Drive. Before we got to the tenth hill effort, my legs already would be trembling. Great views from there west over the Pacific Ocean and south down well into Mexico. That hill taught me the value of hill repeats.

Well, one person actually answered the OP, albeit partially. The answer is that he was not quite at 'hero' standard. Nice, worthy guy, I'm sure, but his 1983 Boston time was tainted as windy, so his career was solid rather than remarkable. Oh, and the 'what was he thinking' Mary thing.

I'm surprised that George hasn't deleted this thread yet. It was amazing how winnie was with aiding in recovery from racing and running 3:20/km pace on recovery days {allegedly}. The only downside to it would be by pushing the envelope day in and day out, an athlete opens oneself up to debilitating injuries (sciatic) and non-running related problems like sterility. One could argue that the Chinese cigarette sponsorship cash made it all worth it.

Please share your marathon credentials with us “hero”. We’re dying to know how good your ‘83 Boston time was. Or maybe your last run in that fat ass 5k you stumbled through.
