so my kid is 8th grade has never run - although i’m still holding out hope :) anyway today he competed in middle school competition mini olympics and he was picked for the mile based on some gym class qualification. He ran a 5:11 and dad calculated splits as follow 1:02, 1:19, 1:25, and 1:25. How much did that 1st lap sprint impact final time do you guys think? Would 5 minutes have been reasonable if initial lap was paced appropriately (1:15)? Real question I guess - how much of a time penalty is incurred by going out waaay too fast!
