This weekend Zimbabwe's Isaac Mpofu won the Durdank marathon in a PB of 2:10.
After the race Mpofu was informed he would be disqualified for not wearing a bib number on his back (as the rules stipulated runners wear front AND back numbers).
Mpofu lost 4000 USD (no small sum to a Zimbbwayan) and a world champ invite.
But here’s the thing: Mpofu had in fact informed the officials PRIOR to the race that his sealed competitor packet was missing the back bib. He was given the go-ahead by them to race without it. They then reversed course after he finished.
