I went to a meet last week to watch a kid run. I had heard some rumblings about his talent. Supposedly, he plays basketball in the summer and the winter and rarely trains. Maybe 20-25 MPW during season and that's it. This kid opened up his season in Marcg out of basketball in the mid 4:40's for 1600.
In the 1600 this past week he faced down a 4:19 and 4:16 kid and won. It was a tactical race, with a finishing time in 4:20 flat, but I saw something I've never seen a high schooler do. The young man closed his last 400m in 57.2. It was unreal.
He went on to anchor the 4x400, holding off a 49 flat 400 guy and splitting 50. low.
Are there lots of kids out there like this? I came away amazed. I've been involved in the sport my whole life. I've only heard stories about high schoolers closing that fast, not to mention a 16-year old with hardly any miles?
What do you who've seen real talent think?
