I just came off a marathon PB when I ran 2:56 a month ago.
Since the marathon, I took 1 week completely off. Since then, I've been building up my mileage slowly over 3 weeks. My training looks like the following
- Week 1: rest
- Week 2: just easy run for 5 days, around 45mins each, plus strides at the end
- Week 3: 4 easy runs with strides + 1 20mins tempo + 1 long run
- Week 4: 3 easy runs with strides + 1 6x200m VO2max session + 1 20mins tempo + 1 progressive long run
My easy run pace is around 15-20 seconds slower per mile with heart rate c.5bpm higher now than when I was training for the marathon. In the last 2 tempo runs, I could just about hold my marathon pace (6:45mins) at c.165-170bpm, whereas previously I was holding 6:15mins for tempo runs when training for the marathon at the same heart rate.
Is this normal? Do you guys experience a similar level of loss in fitness following a peak race even with limited time off?
