We ran into an interesting situation at a race this weekend, which I'm sure comes up all the time. The race gave out prize money to top 5 overall and top 5 masters, and had the same amounts allocated to overall and masters. The first, third, and sixth finishers were masters, and there was no double dipping allowed, so there was a question of how to pay out the prize money. The initial plan was to pay the third place finisher (masters) third overall money, and the sixth place finisher (masters) first place masters money, which would have paid more to the sixth place finisher than to the third place finisher, even though they were both masters.
After some debate, the race director settled on this policy, which I think was fair: the first finisher (masters) got the first overall prize money, the second finisher (not masters) got the second overall prize money, the third finisher (masters) got the first masters prize money, and then they just kept going down the finishers in order, assigning non-masters to overall prize money, and masters to whichever category paid more at that point in the list.
The race director wants to make the prize policy clear on the website for next year's race, but it's hard to spell the policy out in words. Does someone have a clear definition of this policy? Does the policy have a name?
