New strange women's half marathon scoring table explained

    Letsrun claims women's half marathon table adjustment seems odd considering equivalent improvements in marathon since 2017. However, what they did notice is that there have been way more recent improvements in the half marathon outside of the top 30. The scoring tables are based on deaper performances than the top performances. Lets look at performances within 6 minutes of the marathon and 3 minutes of the half marathon world records. Of the 68 half marathon performances at 65:52 or faster, only 4 (6%) were run before 2017 (11 before 2018). Of the 88 marthons at 20:04 or faster, 28 (32%) were before 2017 (32 before 2018). The big difference comes from the fact that women have been running 2:19 marathons, consistently, for awhile now, yet very few women have been running 65 min half marathons until recently. Below are the data. Note I am looking at multiple performances by ahtlete. The reason for this, is that if you only look at the top performance per athlete you lose a lot of early performances by top athletes as athletes tend to improve.

    So it makes that the half marathon tables got a big adjustment while the marathon tables didn't, 94% of times within 3 min of the world record have been run from 2017 onwards, whereas only 68% of marathon times withing 6 min of the world record have been run from 2017 onwards. That's a huge difference.
