Maybe if you looked at the lyrics of the song you would see canadians feelings towards joining the states.
"American woman, stay away from me
American woman, mama let me be
Don? come hangin?around my door
I don? wanna see your face no more"

And on behalf of all Canadians I'd like to apologize to America for being so stupid, electing Prime Ministers who can't speak French or English (must have made for difficult discussions between leaders) and for hating you. There really are a lot of Canadians who love you Yanks. You're some of our favourite people in the whole wide world.
And if this election doesn't result in a Conservative government please, please, PLEASE INVADE IMMEDIATELY.
We can't take anymore of this Liberal B.S.

haven't read anything better in a week... at least there are some rational canadians out there... some of those 'mean' remarks don't have to be appologized for... Canada IS part of the states, really, canadians are just too damn stubborn to admit it.

Canadians spend to much time worrying, discussing, and debating what it mean's to be Canadian. Then we define it by not being American.....pathetic.

I can understand that you may prefer the Conservatives to the Liberals, but how would Canada improve if the US invaded us? Don't get me wrong, the US is a global powerhouse with a lot to offer, but I'm not sure that the average Canadian's lifestyle would improve if they all became Americans.
And to "Proud Canadian", please change your user name.
It would vastly improve their educational, health care, and political systems! Isn't it obvious?

ya a song about about not wanting to be an American or part of America doesn't define Canada's national identity as being anymore then 'not American' or anything does it?
All you Canadians are so obsessed with not being Americans you don't even know who you are. One word for that: DENIAL. So go eat some Tim Hortons and try and rationalize how you really aren't Americans while you wait for 3 years in your national health care queue for some psychological help.

c, it is you who seems to be confused. First you state that Canada already is part of America and that most Canadians already know more about American history then they know about Canadian history -- as if to suggest that Canadians are a willing part of America. Then you go on to say ALSO "Canadians' favourite song by a Canadian band is the 'American Woman'". The use of ALSO suggests that your point about American Woman further proves your point that Canadians love America and are a part of it. This of course is at odds with the whole point of the song - which Pete correctly pointed out. You then argued with Pete, by proving that you actually knew what the song meant. Which begs the question, "why did you reference it in the first place?" On top of that you then start ranting about Canadian's identity, when this was never at issue in the first place.
Given this odd behaviour, I wonder if perhaps the problem is not that we are obsessed with not being American, but that you personally are insecure about the fact that some people in the world don't want to be like you. Let me know when you have saved enough money to afford your own psychological help.
Another Canadian in self loathing. What a suprise. I guess one good thing has come out of your health care system, it seems to have rid your country of Stockholm syndrome. Peace out my fellow war mongerer.
HA,ha...the USA has already taken over Canada economically. We sold our country out years ago and now we sit around a camp fire and sing #%!@% folk songs about the good old days when England use to tell us when to go to war.
Hey if we want to be a real player we need to start building/inventing our own stuff, build up our arm forces, and grow a pair. But no let's shop at Wal Mart, Home Depot and talk crap about America, once again pathetic!

Hey, come on now; that's just plain unfair. Canada doesn't have Soviet-style health care. Cuban-style? Well, ya. North Korean style? You betcha. But not Soviet, assuming that that is what you meant when you wrote "Sovit". Perhaps "Sovit Style" refers to the way doctors dress in Canada. Like 'Slope Style' or 'Street Style'. Or 'Illiterate Fukkwad Style'.

I'm not sure how this responds to my question. I wasn't disputing America's influence on Canada. But I'm interested in how "being a real player" improves the average Canadians' lifestyle?
And by the way, you still haven't changed your user name.

My vote for post of the day!
I was just rambling and ranting like a Quebecker but your right I don't think it was a specific response to your comment.
I thought my user name is Proud Canadian?
Rational Canadians, kind of an oxymoron but there are a few out there. I can't wait to get back home and hopefully help out Paul McKeever, one of the few rationalist politicians in Canada with the Freedom Party.http://www.freedomparty.ca

It's pretty amusing reading this thread on cdn politics on letsrun. I think I am on the wrong message board having interest in a coherent and logical discussion-so vicious, nasty and suspicious crowd !
Regarding question period, the prime minister is always well prompted and briefed on the range of issues that could come up in Question period. Often the replies do not match the question, but rather just cover the subject matter. nonetheless, the last few prime ministers have had a good presence though no one since trudeau was as eloquent. it'd be an interesting experiment to see dubya do question period. snl content for decades and decades

I thought Canadians had good health care...
Why are Canadians being bashed right now for THEIR political decisions when one of the dumbest men alive is the U.S. president???
Many U.S. citizens aren't very smart. "C" you are one of those citizens. You are probably fat and racist as well.
I'm off to Timmy's. Bonjour muthaf***a
I'm descended from Tories who had to leave this country and flee to Canada after the revolution.
In the late 1800's they left New Brunswick and headed back to the states.
Why? Because there was nothing up there for them.
And there still isn't.
Canada is almost completely irrelevant.
If it didn't have shale oil and timber it would be totally irrelevant.
Oh yeah, they also do some fishing.

If being irrelevant means that I get to hang out in a politically stable, relatively cheap, safe, first world country with free health care, abundant food, and a reasonably accountable political system, with nobody bugging me to be either with them or against them, then bring it on. Just please don't let others know just exactly how irrelevant we are.
