Current high school junior. My sophomore year of high school, I ran 18:34 for 5k XC, 2:07 in the 800, and 4:53 in the 1600. I spent most of the year hovering around 130-136 pounds, with my weight gradually increasing from 130 during XC to 136 by the end of track season. But I got significantly faster with each passing month during track season - in March I ran 2:16 and ultimately got down to 2:07 by May. Over the summer, I continued training at roughly the same mileage (40-ish miles per week) in preparation for cross country, but I found that, despite training consistently, I was in terrible shape in September and I was 147 pounds. For the most part I was eating healthily and reasonably; I attribute it mostly to natural growth. I didn't get any taller, but I became much more muscular. It is now April, and all of my PRs are still from my sophomore year despite training consistently year-round at 40 mpw and managing my efforts. I'm not that far off where I was at this point last year (2:10 last year and have run 2:13 three times this year), but it seems clear to me that I'm still adjusting to this new equilibrium.
I want to start a discussion on these types of developments in high school runners. Have any of you had experiences like this, and did you find that you eventually did get much faster once you "adjusted" to the new weight? This is a common experience amongst high school girls but less so amongst boys. Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to give context for the discussion. Not sure if I'll actually get any responses but I figured I'd at least try to see if anyone wants to share their thoughts.
