I'm a very new runner. I started running last outdoor track season during our adjusted/shortened covid season and was around 2:15 for the 800 and 5:10 in the 1600. I didn't put in any summer miles because I thought I was going to play soccer, but last minute decided to switch to cross country in the fall. During cross country I worked my way down to a 17 flat 5k with an extremely limited base. When indoor track came around, my races were limited because our usual facilities were being used for covid testing sites. I ran two races: a 1k and an 800m. My 1k time was a 2:46 and my 800 was a 2:12 (granted, the 800 was run on the crappiest gym floor indoor track with nike pegasus shoes on). Ever since the end of cross country, my coach (a former D1 800m runner himself) says he's optimistic to get me sub 2 this season. I've done a couple workouts where all my reps were under 4 minute mile pace but I don't think it's enough. I think it's gonna be really hard to traverse the 2:0_'s but sub 2 might be on the table next season. Any tips/advice/thoughts?
