how fast will Newbury go?
"Racing" - more precisely they are part of the same contested exhibition. Both looking to shatter applicable 4xmile records/best. If Bowerman was any fun, we'd see them field a team, which would go off as underdog but would have a shot (Ahmed, Fisher, Thompson and Centro/Scott/Woody?)
If Newbury Park beats any pro teams that enter, the members of that team should be forced to retire from the sport on the spot.
They will beat a pro team for sure. Not sure about OAC. I don't think they will beat them, but the other teams can be taken down by Newbury Park
Empire Elite has two 800m types moving up to the mile. That can be pretty tough running alone. Colby would be a pretty low stick (3:53-3:57?), so that gives them breathing room. Holt should be good for a 3:56-59 split you would think. Someone has a big off day, you never know...
Good thing Centro isn't involved.
We'll see what other pro teams show up, but it'll take a very bad day for NP to beat those listed.
No way on OAN.
Ireland only has two listed but they are 3:53 and 3:54 milers. As long as they pull some other low 4min types, no shot for NP.
And Empire Elite has 3:52, 3:56, 4:01, 4:07.
So Empire Elite is most susceptible. But there (by far) slowest leg is equal to NP 3rd best leg and there other legs are all superior. Plus that leg is a 1:47 guy, so presumably more upside at the mile than he's shown.
Damn Carlos must really be hurting for them to put in two distance guys. I'm worried my boy Morgs is gonna get injured trying to get in mile shape over the next 6 weeks. From what he's said and his sporadic Strava activity he has not been doing any workouts for a while now.
Holy fudge yes! Thank goodness they’ll have people at their league or faster there this time. I think they could get low-mid 16:20’s if all goes well. Aaron could run 2nd or 3rd and maybe get 4:06-4:08 realistically. Colin maybe 4:00-4:01 this go around. Leo could be seeing a 4:05-4:06 assuming he laps little people. And Lex, about 4:07 or so. They should be pushed way more this time so they could either be near the same time as a few days ago or they may get as far as 16:10’s but I wouldn’t bet on it. I’d say 60% chance of a 16:20 and a 30-35% for 16:10’s especially high 16:10’s. 15-20% for 16:30’s also.
Most importantly, they won't have 10 other slow teams that they are constantly lapping and having to run in the 2nd lane to go around them. That alone should save Newbury Park at least 5 seconds.
So Brosnan wasn't BSing when he talked about NP at Penn Relays. I'd like to see a few more teams entered. I don't see NP hanging with ON or Ireland. They have an outside chance against Empire, if only because it's still early in the season for post collegiate athletes. It's so hard to predict their time. Ideally there would be a team that averages 4:03-4:04 that NP may not be able to beat but they could try to follow.
I had written about this in our WTW this week. I said I had been told Penn wouldn't let them into the COA 4 x mile but there might be a pro/open event.
I wrote that Penn should let Newbury Park run in the COA 4 x mile. I get why they don't want the best HS teams regularly running college races as then it kills the HS stuff.
But this does the same thing for the COA 4 x mile. IF you are Princeton , who has 3 sub-4 guys or someone, do you really want to waste your time in the 4 x mile on Saturday when you can run in better conditions at night against better teams? The precedent has been set. They are letting HS teams run pro events so why not college?
I think the call now is for Penn to get rid of the COA 4 x mile. There is going to be zero prestige to that now. The sprint fans don't want to watch 16 minutes of strung out distance action anyways. Just have this 4 x mile be the only 4 x mile. You can hand out watches to the top college team - just like they do in the 10,000. They used to have college and open and then it got combined I believe.
They will be in the same race, they won’t be racing though
They will lose by 200 meters. Smart to put the team fast to slow so they aren't too far behind after the first leg.
Anyone know if this means they will be bypassing CIF post season? Meaning skipping state meet qualifying?
What's the world record?? That On Athletics lineup is scary.
Best bet for the HS boys is to hang on with Empire Elite or hope Team Ireland is closer to their speed.
I'll answer my own question.
The World Athletics governing body does not recognise a World Record in this event. The World Best for men in the event is a time of 15:49.08 by an Irish team of Eamonn Coghlan, Marcus O'Sullivan, Frank O'Mara and Ray Flynn in 1985, representing an average of 3:57.3 per mile for each runner.
They are capable of destroying the WR.
college teams should enter the open race
I think this has to be a more consistent thing. The interest in a 4x mile for a pro team might be a one-year blip, so it’s a pretty reactionary take Rojo.
I agree there should be some D1 teams throwing their hats in the ring. But let’s acknowledge for a second that Newbury is racing a pro team, not a college team. That’s how good this HS squad is.
