From my perspective, it looked like they went too slowly in the first half for Cook and she had a LOT more in the tank with a 68 close after taking the lead halfway through and running multiple 36s. She can probably get the record in the right race right now.
oh you made a separate thread. Im starting to wonder how you beat this kid? she just seems to have several gears ahead of anyone else in the country. she was lapping state champions with ease and didnt look tired...
BU's track would have helped. But in any case, Natalie Cook went out too slow the first mile to get the record. If she had run the first mile around 4:50, she might have had a shot at the national record of 9:38.
Cook's mile splits were 4:57.77, then 4:46.68.
Her last 1/4 was 68.26! She had a lot more in the tank.
Thought she deserved a titled thread...Shea of MA was 9:52 and Perez of NJ was also under 10. The other thing that happened is there were 3 girls at 10:20 in the next to last heat. More and more depth.
True but the year she ran 9:58 she had anchored the DMR and the SMR earlier that same meet in very fast times. The next year when she ran 9:51 with Hart she had already run her full indoor team season, including the 3000 record and had anchored the DMR again the day before. She had a legitimate shot the the Cain record but they were the defending DMR national champions.

yeah Shea has a crazy bright future if she stays healthy (I stand by my Jenna Hutchins comparison) but Cook is just dazzling. It looked like she was being held back when she was behind Perez and Shea. There were several times when she seemed to be short stepping to keep from running into them. And then she turned on those after burners and that was it... how do you tire her out to keep her from doing that when she can run with anyones pace?
Ellie Shea and Angelina Perez are excellent runners and ran really well, but it was ridiculous how quickly Natalie Cook dropped them when she made her move.
What girls in high school history could have outkicked Natalie Cook's 68 in the last 400? Maybe Mary Cain? Anyone else?
