The World (FIFA) and European (UEFA) football associations have banned Russian and Belarus club teams and national sides (both men’s and women’s) from international competition, effectively taking the Russian national side out of the 2022 European Championships. The International Ice Hockey Federation, the World Curling Federation (!), World Rugby and others
have taken or are taking steps to freeze Russia out of international sports competitions. Even the normally timid IOC has recommended ““that International Sports Federations and sports event organizers not invite or allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in international competitions”.
So, where is World Athletics? Seb? Five days ago WA issued a statement “condemning Russia’s military action,” but what else? Yes, Russian athletes are barred from competing as the Russian National Athletics Team, but there are so many exceptions that “ban” is virtually meaningless. Are we still welcoming dopers with bazookas? Or are we afraid of offending Papa
Massata Diack and his friends who might support Russia on financial grounds?
Update: WA has banned Russian and Belarussian athletes from all World Athletic Series events. So they can compete at one day meetings but not global championships
