What's the best way to increase my ability to shift paces during a race? It seems that others are simply quicker to accelerate: for example, if both I and others are changing from 5k pace to an all-out kick, I end up losing ground at first, though after a few seconds I maintain my separation with people. Unfortunately, they have the lead by then, and can maintain it.
I know how to get quicker, and I have developed in that regard. But it's the goal of any distance runner not just to have good sprint speed, but to have a good KICK -- to be able to respond to others' moves, and to do so quickly. If I'm next to some guy with 100 to go, and he opens it up, I don't want to be toast if he has decent top speed. I'm aware of the options available to guys with less effective kicks -- go from farther out, just never let others get close, go when they least expect it, etc. -- but it won't always be possible to rely on these methods to beat people. I know it isn't, having lost as well as won in these situations. What's the solution?
