Just because someone ran a bad time or a team had 1 slow guy doesn't mean they'll let you walk on with those times.
I can tell none of you have run D1 nor have you bothered to check the performance lists. This is not an outlier. There are hundreds of performances in the 15:45-16:05 range.
That isn't D1. I ran 14:10 and wasn't top 7 on my team. Why would a 16 minute guy want to go to a no name school and be the 1000th worst guy in D1? That isn't D1. That's like telling people that you qualified for Boston marathon and finished 10,000th place in the race.

Again, you can find some really bad schools (athletically) or some D1 colleges that don't give scholarships and find guys who run 16:00. But, all told in D1, yes, 16:00 for 5000 is an outlier. I'm not sure what the point of this thread is. If it's trying to say you can be a 16:00 5,000 guy in college and have a buffet of D1 schools to choose from, you're going to be sadly mistaken. There are a lot of guys on D1 mid major schools who run 14:45 who don't even get to run in the good meets.

I think the point is that a good number of kids who run 15:45-16:05 in HS can develop into D1 contributors in the 14:00 range. So unless you're talking about a perennial top 20 program, there's a place for those athletes in many D1 schools.
That just isn't true. I challenge you to list 20 of the guys in the NCAA who are around 14 minutes this year who ran around 16 minutes in high school. There are about 100 guys to choose from if you give or take 12 seconds on either side of 14 minutes. You will lose the challenge.

You are going to have to define "many" for me. I'm not willing to consider a 15:45 guy. The thread started with talking about a 16:00 guy. The vast majority of D1 colleges are NOT interested in a 16:00 guy. Sometimes you see even a moderately good running program with a guy on the team that is that slow, but often he's there because he has a full ride academic scholarship or some kind of in with the coaching staff or something.
You are correct while he is not. He said that schools outside top 20 would be interested. That is not close to being true. He would need to get outside of top 100 to find minimal interest. Even schools around 150th may take a 16 minute kid but that doesn't mean they are interested.
The Asun conference listed above has a lot of good guys who did run run a 5k this year. 7:47 guy, 13:53 guy, 8:35 steepler, 14:01 guy, guy who qualified for ncaas in XC this year and many others.

I was definitely on the more encouraging side on that Butler thread but I don't think 16:00 gets you to a D1 walk on spot. Sure, you might be able to stick somewhere but that's not the example to make the norm. I will say that there are plenty of sub-2, sub-4:30 types in HS that don't break 16 & might be able to walk on because they're gonna focus on mid-d & are underdeveloped. I think you gotta be closer to 15:30 if you're trying to walk on as a distance runner. 16:00 is an outlier if you've broken 2 & 4:30.
My HS #1 went D3 & never ran faster than 16:40 or so in XC. Mile time in the 4:30s I think. That feels like the right line to me. Have a lot of D3 choice, but probably can't walk on at most D1s. They might have found somewhere to run but it probably would have been a lot less fun.
The following team finished 2nd to last in their conference in XC in the fall. Pretty sure that means they are not a top 20 distance team or probably not even top 100 distance team. But a few posters think that slow guys have a home on good D1 teams. Yes, a slow guy may know somebody in order to get a spot or have a 36 ACT, but why bother wasting your time for a year in D1 on a decent team only to be asked to move on.
