Alan Webb To Run Mile At Kansas Relays
LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas Relays Meet Director Tim Weaver announced today that Alan Webb will contest the Glenn Cunningham Invitational Mile at the 2003 Kansas Relays, April 16-19.
"Alan is one of track and field's household names, and it says something about the Kansas Relays that he has chosen to attend this meet in his first year as a professional runner," Weaver said. "When ESPN breaks into Sportscetner to show your race live on national TV, as they did for Alan at the Pre Classic, you know that you are one of the biggest figures on the track landscape. I will be very anxious to see Alan add his unique mark to this event's amazing history at our meet. With his addition, will have the strongest and deepest Kansas Relays mile field in many, many years, perhaps ever."
The national high school record holder for indoor mile, outdoor mile and 1,500m, Webb's mile time of 3:59.86 seconds at New York City's Armory in 2001 made him the first American high school miler ever to run under four minutes indoors. Just four months later, Webb accomplished something many thought impossible. At the Prefontaine Classic, a well-paced race and a final lap of 55.3 seconds enabled Webb to run a 3:53.43 in the mile, breaking the national HS record of 3:55.3 that was set by Jim Ryun 36 years ago. Webb left the University of Michigan after a strong freshman campaign to turn professional and be coached again by his high school mentor Scott Raczko.
Notable past champions in the Invitational Mile include Glenn Cunningham (twice), Archie San Romani (twice), Wes Santee (twice), Jim Ryun (four times), Michael Cox (twice), and Charlie Gruber (twice).
