Visa Olympics commercial compares being Black to suffering through CHEMOTHERAPY

If you came from another planet you would be surprised the country wasn’t 90% Black. Black is everything. Really annoying.

I totally agree. I got so upset when I heard this all I wanted to do is yell at the tv. What nerve to make this comparison. I’m not surprised.

Why can’t you be a female Olympian that just happens to have black skin. This commercial is extremely off base. As if no one with non-black skin has had to overcome obstacles to get to the Olympics. The more that the message is blacks are different the more they make themselves different. Then they wonder why they are treated different.

The media is the virus. Race baiting for attention and ratings, white shaming. They know they can push any BS self serving agenda for revenue and sheep will eat it for breakfast. That's their target audience because there's a plethora of them.

it was unbelievably stupid. "I went through 12 rounds of chemotherapy." ... "I'm black and surrounded by people who aren't." And they showed her 'surrounded' by white people lol, like oh god the poor woman! what a hardship!

Yeah cuz there’s not 20 other Americans of any race in your event at the Olympics. Sorry if there aren’t any African Americans representing South Korea, China, Japan, Russia, Norway, etc. He’ll, a European American could be the only vanilla face a lot of the time!

I've got to agree with op in this one. A pro athlete is so privileged they won't experience the effects of racism someone poor growing up in Trumplandia will. They've elected to live near whatever training center they're based out of because its even better for them there than living in an area with more people of African descent. I haven't seen the commercial so I don't know the athlete or sport but most winter athletes come from well to do families - have to in order to afford the early training and competition for most winter sports. There aren't too many kids who scrapped together for skates and then trained on frozen ponds in northern maine.

This screams white guilt. Race obsessed is bad for everyone.

Exactly what I've always thought about any of this stuff. I guess I shouldn't really assume since I'm not black, but the more young black kids are told how unique they are and how tough it will be, seems like it would cause an opposite more decisive effect.

Everyone knows that all of us should adopt how four year olds treat each other. They don't care about race. So why start kids so early in learning how different you should feel around others?

What does this commercial accomplish?

Does it increase white sensitivity to black needs?

No it actually has the opposite effect. Particularly with those who have gone through life threatening cancer and chemotherapy. Being black is not in anyway in the same category and its disrespectful to pretend it is.

Does it increase black confidence?

No, it makes being black seem like an awful disability that blacks need to overcome.

Also as a liberal, it makes our efforts at reducing racism look silly. It just gets grouped as being more woke behavior, and the real positive moves to reduce racism become diminished by it.

This commercial fails at everything.

Advertising used to be based on demographics. Not any more. 85% of all the brothers and sisters showcased in ads these days are buying nothing but the best cars, homes, clothing and jewelry. They eat out at the swankiest restaurants and are world travelers. This in addition to having their own TV shows, networks, magazines, schools, political organizations, endless government funded programs and more. Yep, that poor little female, of color athlete (translation VICTIM) is suffering through a pure living hell surrounded by competition that is not of her race.
