How many miles per week should a brand new high-school girl's distance runner start off with?

What grade is she in? What events does she want to run (if she even knows)? It also sort of depends if you have other girls in her situation or close to her ability to run with. Probably just a 2-3 miles a day a day at first depending on what she can handle. She can so strides, core, mobility, plyos, cross training some days.

In my situation, the girls are sophomores and juniors.

I started them on a similar program to what you just suggested, tycobb, and they seem to be doing well on 15-18 miles per week in six runs. Some minor growing pains with some athletes but others seem to be flourishing.

Hoping to get them up to around 25 miles per week by the end of the outdoor season but don't want to risk rushing anything.

You have to monitor her weight and do regular skinfold tests for fat levels.

It is no longer deemed good to put all this out on the internet so you will have to use other methods to gain compliance.

Let us know how you get on prior to looking for the new job.

They are all different. Of their other activities ask them how frequent and the history of what they do.

For example, I have two athletes that do ballet. Sometimes several hours at a time in class. I know they are very unlikely to develop Achilles / calf issues. I have another girl with a big soccer background but that is not enough information. An example here is to ask what position they play and how frequently. If they are a seasoned midfielder than 20-30 miles within a couple of weeks might be ok.

Ask about their injury history, etc.

First years I get up to 30mpw or so. First week it’s generally 30min easy which of course some may have to walk jog until they can run for 30min. All depends on their background. When i start workouts its tempo runs or cruise intervals for time so instead of say 5xmile its 5x5min so a fast guy may hit a mile but a slow beginner runner 800m. I also do a mile time trial before the first workout to estimate paces.

I would say no more than 15-20 mpw.

15-20 mpw in 5 days with one cross training day and one day completely off
