Road racing has historically seen a lot of disrespect and the Half Marathon has perhaps seen the worst of it. People like to say that the roads is where old athletes who are no longer fast enough to stay on the track go to die (career-wise, that is). There is this perception of road racing that it is weaker in terms of competition and the Half Marathon is weaker still as even the old people who turn to the roads seldom run it.
There is some credence to that argument.
The HM wr progression and, by extent, the standard for a good half marathon has seemingly lagged behind the other long distance records/standards by a considerable margin (decades, even). Prior to 2019, the HM wr stood at well over 58 minutes. That record was equivalent to a Marathon time of 2:04:21, however that barrier had been crossed in the marathon way back in 2008. In the 5000m and 10000m, the times equivalent to the aforementioned HM were 12:45 and 26:36 respectively. Yet those barriers had similarly already been crossed, this time over two decades before, waaaay back in 1995 and 1997.
Times have changed.
Talented runners are now trying their hand (or is it feet?) at road racing younger and younger. They're no longer waiting until the end of their careers to run on the roads. As evidence of this, one need only look to none other than Jacob Kiplimo and Rhonex Kipruto who were among the first to break the 58 minute barrier in the HM at just 20 years of age. Leading the pack in that historic race was the then-24yo Kandie.
We need to recognize that the Half Marathon world record has all but caught up.
If you had told me all those things about the HM record being soft back in 2018, I probably would have agreed. But since then, we've seen the record go from 58:18 to 57:31. I agree that the old record is soft and a high 58 is not awfully impressive, but we're past that. We're now heading into 57 low territory. The HM has caught up. If we examine where other world records currently sit, this becomes clear:
The 800m sits at 1301pts.
The 1500m, 1302pts
The 5000m, 1302pts.
The 10000, 1306pts.
Jacob Kiplimo's HM wr? 1299pts. Those other performances may be more impressive, but not by much.
