So I just love this test. Well, I don't love doing it, but I love that I get a pretty good estimate of a key parameter of my running fitness. I like it because it's unpaced - you just go as hard as you can at each moment, and in theory towards the end of the test you've eaten up your W' and you are running at CV.
Anyway, I got to thinking - is there a downside to doing it every month or so? In the past, I didn't do many workouts, just built volume over the cycle, so I didn't think a sporadic really hard effort would be an issue (probably a good thing).
I am now overthinking. I hear talk of the diminishing returns of VO2max work. Mitochondria getting eaten away and you need to rebuild your base, blah blah.
I'm following a Daniels HM plan now (I'm doing a long cycle that will maybe lead to a marathon), and I want to know if it's appropriate to include a CV test every month at all stages of training. Curious to hear your thoughts!
