Hi - coming off a calf strain during XC, tried to come back in-season a little too soon, and had to shut it down. It was my first high school season, training was going well. I did about 7 races or so in my Nike Spikes and flats, mileage was in the high 30's in Pegasus 38's. It first hurt some after a race on some soft sand, but made it worse on a hill course 5 days later.
Anyway, I have done steady ART massage, and 6 weeks of PT. I do calf stretches and strengthening several times a week. Back to running normal mileage, but no speed yet. No pain either. To play it safe, could I use a shoe the the Brooks Hyperion with it's 8mm drop, rather than my 4mm drop Nikes for at least a few indoor races, 1600/3200, and even into spring track? I am just thinking that my flats and spikes might have contributed to some of the strain.
I'm not at the top level, so I'm not running varsity speed times yet. But I'd like to get through the next two seasons without the calf giving out. I know the Brooks is more for speed workouts, but I would use it for that and for some of my races too. Unless something like a heel cup on my Nike flats would make more sense. Can anyone advise? Thanks!
