Can’t believe people are recommending such low caliber guns. If animals are truly the threat you fear on a run then you should be running with a pretty darn big gun.
I agree with most of the others on here; there is no need for the gun while running. I carry when I go out in public because man is more dangerous then bear. I don’t carry on runs.
I think you are confusing "hunting and killing" with defending and deterring. Two totally different things.
Quick research (a) (who knows if it's 100% accurate) but average California Black bear weight is 190 pounds for a male and 128 pounds for females. I don't know where this misconception comes from, but people seem to think that black bears are 5,000 pounds, 20 feet long and made of Kevlar and concrete.
Little thought experiment for you: If an average black bear where chained to a tree and you shot it with a 9mm pistol at a range of 5 feet, that bear is going to notice it, to say the least. It could be a kill shot depending on where you shoot, and it most certainly is going to think twice about it's options of pursuit vs. retreat. Even if you missed, pistols are loud as f#ck. Look, some humans in some situations aren't necessarily "stopped" by a 9mm round. But, with that said, let me shoot you and then tell us about your experience (I'm speaking hypothetically of course).
With all that said, you don't need a gun for a trail run. Probability of needing it is close to zero.
