I assume greg doesn't care about running anymore as he is still a good age for PRs.

He is more into video productions these days. Making hardcore documentaries about the problems of Edmonton.
A 3:07 is a great goal. It's a time that shows hard work, dedication, and talent. These are also good qualities for screenwriter to have.
With that logic there's no point in trying to be as good as you can at any hobby. Maybe the line is when the cost of improvement get too high idk.
The back end of hobbyjogging is way slower than that.

I know a 3 hour marathon is nothing special, but I can't even beat that!
I know a guy that can't break 20:44 for a 5k yet he thinks he's a competitive runner.
He's only a competitive loser.
I am surprised that only two or three replies have anything to do with how to break three hours. They are mostly inside jokes about someone named Greg? Is that a thing? Who cares about Greg? Weirdly, it feels like everyone on this thread is referring to shared knowledge that the rest of humanity has never heard of (nor cares about).
As for breaking three, here is an honest reply:
1) how old are you? How many marathons have you run? What were your times (do you see progression)?
2) what is your body type? Are you a strength based athlete or lean/lanky? Do you have a lot of extra body weight (like I do) that could be dropped?
3) what kind of mileage can you sustain without getting injured?
4) what are your times at shorter distances like the 10km and HM?
5) What kind of long runs have you traditionally done in each build up? Four over 22 miles? Or one at 20 miles?

It's easy. Get your 5k down to roughly 18:15 (5:50 pace) then just jog 50-60 miles for 10 weeks. Worked for me.

Find another hobby, like knitting.

LOL. Probably not the best training plan for a sub 3, but yeah - that would probably work!

At least he's competitive at something. Unfortunately, his 5k time converts to about a 3:20 marathon.

My best 5k of 16:22 converts to a marathon of 2:48
So does my best 10 mile of 57:58.

Your life to this date converts to loser for life. That's all that matters.
Focus on getting your xc 8k around 26. If you can do that you are objectively better than a 3:07 marathoner and almost certainly could break 3hrs.
