Was wondering if anyone knows how fast a person can go in the mile/1600m with about a 20 minute 5k time.

I've run a 5:18 mile without being able to run a sub 20 5K, but I'm a 200/400 guy.
In my very first 5k I ran a 5:20 first mile and ended in 19:40. So yes its possible if you race terribly and are a noob like I was.
According to the VDOT equivalent calculator pioneered by Dr Jack Daniels 19:53 for 5K is equivalent to 5:49 for one mile. If you are a high schooler that just ran 19:53 in XC and are starting indoor track now you will probably outperform Jack Daniels predictions for shorter distances. So I am guessing you would be close now (maybe high 5:30s) and would break into the 5:20s in indoor season given reasonable training and intervals etc.
I ran a 445 1500 with a 1930-45 5k (female). I was definitely more of a 400/800 runner though and struggled with distance. My training consisted of low mileage/high intensity
Thanks guys, this helped a lot. It seems like it varies from person to person, but I think with proper mile training, a 5:30 mile should not take too long to get.
Most likely. Don't quote me, but I think so. I was running in the 19's my junior year (or slower) but nearly broke 5 for the mile.

Update: I tested it and got 5:52, I haven't trained for the mile specifically yet though, so I'm not too disappointed.
Keep at it!!!
And yeah, there is a ton of variability from personto person. I was in 5:32 shape when I first broke 20 (19:45), and I ran 5:07 and 18:17 in the same cycle. Just depends what your focus is, and I’m a bit better at speed than endurance.
