Bowerman Track Club's Women's Team - Much Smaller & No New Recuits

Both Lucia Stafford and Andrea Seccafien of Canada are joining the group. Agree that you have to take a bad deal as an American but Canadians (with a few exceptions) usually don’t have big deals anyway so maybe that’s why they are being added.

Mistake for Seccafien. Bideau burns people but not as bad as Schumacher.

The flow of money from corporate has been trimmed substantially according to my contacts. The current company leadership is comprised of business people from elsewhere. No connections to U of O, track, or sports in general. Lots of McKinsey consultants and former tech industry executives. With the Salazar and Houlihan incidents, the leash is pulled pretty tight right now and the budgets are smaller.

I think the cuts/contracts that were due up after the Olympic cycle are the end of the bleeding for the time being.

Why is that? Olympic/world championship gold and 3x Olympian. Fans at meets absolutely love the guy. Highly interactive with kids wanting pics, etc. Colorful figure in a sport full of boring zombies.

If so, that would be a sad departure.

Nike was built by track and field enthusiasts. Pioneers that drank beers in a garage, brainstorming and dabbling into making a better shoe for runners - from the tread on up. These were guys who envisioned and made products for runners because they ran, coached, and loved the sport. Running enthusiasts embraced what these guys did and bought product - and the rest is history. So one could say the essence of Nike was Track and Field. Legacy should be cherished and supported.

The guys that innovated along the way, that took risks and wild directions are old and have left. Now Nike is made up of a different group. Much of what Nike does now is overly calculated to the point of turning out vanilla products that sell but don’t inspire and technologically lead except for their running shoe sole technology. Which, full circle, is T&F

The amount of money Nike earmarks for T&F is greatly appreciated by the sport and athletes. Overall, though, the resources are small. The three distance teams and individual sprinters, jumpers and throwers dollar wise may account for a couple NBA Nike sponsored athletes by comparison.

Hopefully Phil Knight’s legacy keeps track and field at its core and causes Nike to continue their very much needed and appreciated funding for US T&F athletes.

I think no new recruits because the group has either a) continued to support 1 outlier drug cheat or b) is home to more than one drug cheat.

Shelby has been seen training in Portland. Nothing has changed for her except her ability to race and her public persona.

BTC will reload in 2022 - both women and men.

Natural evolution has taken place. Although hard for those on the chopping block, Nike usually gets its timing of athletes at the tail end of their careers right. How Nike has done with women/girls in high school has proven to be disastrous.

Running is a tough sport on ones body. Can’t stay world class forever. Athletes should always plan for their future just as Nike does for its future.

She's banned from competition. That's it. She can still be coached by whomever. Here she is listed on their team page as proudly as ever:

No specifics but, contracts will be allowed to expire and I do think that we will see some retirements and a roster freshening after WC22.

Surprised to hear that Ella Donahue was turned away, she had a very solid end to her college career and it doesn't seem like BTC should turn away a recruit of that caliber at this stage of the game

Then how come there was so much concern over a tip that Rupp was having secret coaching by Salazar after his ban?

also, Chris Derrick is still on that website but seems to be no longer on the team.

The difference is Salazar was banned as a coach, and therefore would be violating that ban by continuing to do anything that could be considered coaching, regardless of the athlete. Houlihan probably should be barred from contact with her group and coaches, but I don't know if that's how the rule is written or not.
