So i'm a sophomore and i just finished a pretty disapointing xc season. I only broke 18 once on a flat course, that was my only "good" race. I was getting crushed on the hills and felt out of shape the whole season. I think it's mainly because I raced outdoor track until july, and I took time off after so i didn't have time to build a base. Also, I was only running about 20 mpw for the last 2 months of the outdoor season because i felt burned out and i just wanted to end my season and take time off. I still ended up running good times: i ran 2:12 in the 800 and 4:50 in the 1600. I ran 30 mpw during xc season.
I'm taking a week off right now and I was thinking about how I'll train during the winter for my outdoor track season. The goal would be to build a base until march. Then I'll start doing harder workouts. We are still doing some kind of speed workouts in the winter but it is mosly easy 200's or stuff like that to keep the leg moving, like strides. I'm gonna be racing at some indoor meets in january and february but not much, maybe 4-5 times. I want to get at 35-40 mpw and stay consistent, running 6 days a week with a weekly progressive long run of 9-10 miles, and run longer on my easy runs. I really want to keep the winter as easy as possible and be fresh in may. The main reason why i was feeling burned out last season was because i was doing like 2-3 hard workouts in the winter, 25 mpw and i had no base. I'm probably going to take a week off somewhere in february after my last indoor race, and I plan to use the race weeks as down weeks, dropping to 25 miles for those weeks. Then i'm going to rebuild back to 40 mpw in march and april and be careful to not push too hard in the workouts, and then drop to 30 mpw with specefic workouts in may-june and peak. What do you think about that? Be open to share your thoughts and add something, this could be a good thread for high schoolers ending there xc season.
