True runs a smart race finishing a second behind fading Bekele

Seidel runs well, and go Annie Frisbie!!!

Also- Shalane Flanagan will finish within 2 -3 minutes of Steph Bruce.
Therefore Ben True can run 2:06 at Berlin
Okay probably not but this is a promising first Marathon result
I know he's "too old" to have made a successful jump but I think this was a very good debut.
True- OMG Bekele! You’re my favorite runner!
Bekele- Ah yes, thank you. I was just tempoing today. I’m still tired from my 2:06 in Berlin. Was this a pr for you?
All the shoe technology and a perfect day, and the leader less than 40 seconds faster than Rod Dixon ran on a terrible rainy day in 1983. And yes I understand that not all races are time trials!
It's time for Bekele to retire in my opinion. With a good preparation, he can still do a great last race to finish with the honors.

Agree it was a good debut. His strong finish was promising.
More humoured , personally, at the people who thought Bekele was going to run 2:05.

A lot of elite track runners have done well in their debuts. True is at the top of his game and if he has world class aspirations, it was a disappointing performance.

He ran a completely unimpressive race and decided in the last mile or so to make a big push to catch Nathan Martin. I wish the finish was televised because I bet Ben was sprinting his ass off to try to win the Nate Jenkins award.
He finished 7th at New York City in his first marathon, finishing one second behind Bekele. That's "unimpressive", especially for an American? Are you Rupp? If not, f off.
True's debut is probably a B in his mind, but it shows he's capable of sub 2:10 on a fast course...which, given his size and age, would be pretty damn good.

Can we get a video of the finish? Did True sprint madly to try to get the scalp? Did Bekele pick it up to get a little more cash?

I would love to see True closing a huge gap in sub 60 to try and snag Bekele at the line.
Or Bekele looks back, sees True sprinting hard, and picks it up just enough to stay in front.
Either way, finishing a second behind Bekele is a victory for True.
Decent debut for Mr. True. With a little more time 2:11 is possible for him, but any faster is doubtful. Ultimately he justified the appreciation of his new sponsor.
Bekele is the real winner with the appearance fee he likely got.

The ol 2 hour recovery tempo + appearance fee collection and still running faster than most people will ever. What a legend.

That’s because everyone overhyped the shoes. They are great shoes but it’s rubbish to say they make a person way faster. 2:07/2:08 has been a typical winning time in NY for decades now and we have a stacked field and still see a 2:08. Women’s running in general had a delayed start globally so I still expect women’s records to fall more often than men until they “catch up”. Chicago’s course record is from over a decade ago. Berlin has become the ideal course to run fast so anyone ready for a PR in the peak of their career shows up there to take a crack at the record and that’s why that one has been broken.

If Ben True can run 2:12 in NY for his debut I could see him running 2:09 in Chicago or Boston or Berlin. Side note, looks like Kibet rounds out our world marathon team
Ben True is just getting started… he’s gonna be rolling low 2:10s… possibly sub 2:10 who knows! On the right course and say anything is possible. Bekele is done IMO. Hate to see it.
Am I right that if True had beaten Bekele, then he would have been 3rd in for the Worlds team? The top two were locked in, but if True were 6th in 2:12:52 instead of 7th he would be third I think. The guy can't catch a break as far as making teams. Granted, I don't know if he would even want to run worlds or get an appearance fee at a fall marathon so maybe it's whatever to him.
Rupp - 8th Olympics
Kibet - 4th NYC
Mickow - 6th Chicago in 2:13:31
Bennie - 7th Boston in 2:11:26
True - 7th NYC in 2:12:52
2:12:52 is a very solid debut at New York, even with excellent conditions. It is a hilly course relative to the World Marathon Majors, and it is rare for a first marathon to be much faster for Americans. Even if his 5000m/10000m credentials are among the best of Americans trying the marathon, there is a real transition. Even Kandie, albeit with knee issues this year, disappointed, and he's the 57:32 half marathon record holder.
